Amanda Prowse has been called "the queen of family drama" and I'm beginning to see why. The Day She Came Back was an enjoyable, readable novel. Published in 2020, it doesn't quite measure up to 2026's All Good Things , but it's still worth a read.

Eighteen-year-old Victoria is getting ready to go off to see the world when her Grandmother dies unexpectantly. This is especially distressing because she was Victoria's ONLY family. However, Victoria soon learns otherwise when her very much alive mother shows up at the Grandmother's funeral.

Now Victoria must come to terms with the fact of her Grandmother lying to her for her entire life. Also, why did her mother wait until now to show up?

Prowse tells a carefully crafted and thoughtful narrative with Victoria going through a destructive phase that eventually leads to her getting to know and understand her mother and Grandmother's actions. We learn of the series of events that lead to Victoria's upbringing by a set of correspondence between Victoria's mom and Grandmother from before she was born.

An emotional tale, The Day She Came Back is peppered with bright characters and lovely descriptors. Ending with a hopeful future for Victoria, this novel was a pleasure. I would categorize this bood as "Should Read".
