In 1922 Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov is sentenced to exile in the Metropol Hotel of Moscow in communist Russia. There he must live out his days, never to set foot outside of it again. But this kindly gentleman makes a home of the attic rooms of which he is to reside and spends the next decades of his life in this hotel as fully and richly as possible. There he makes a family of the members of the staff, the guests, and takes in a little girl who becomes as his daughter. The Count finds his purpose right there within the walls of his confines. Alexander’s charm and wit eventually change his circumstances and keep the reader engaged right up to the exciting and satisfying end! Full of history, elegance and charm, this novel surely paints a picture of Russia’s past that is informative and very entertaining to read.
