Flora Danes is a survivor. But she doesn't feel as if she's survived. She feels as if everything that she wishes she could leave behind is with her always. Kidnapped from a college spring break trip on a beach, Flora is kept by a madman in a wood coffin for four hundred and seventy-two days. Only let out when her captor has complete control over her, Flora is made to do things that haunt her even after the trauma is over. During that time Flora feels as if she has become someone that she doesn't recognize. Flora was rescued from her ordeal and her kidnapper is dead, but she feels like she has not escaped.

Five years after her release from captivity Flora finds herself in harm's way once again. But this time she will not be the victim. Flora has learned self-defense. She succeeds in escaping by executing her captor, but now Flora has Boston police looking at her. D.D. Warren is the Sargeant detective on the case and she can't figure Flora out. Is she a victim or a vigilante? D.D. has the thought that when it comes to Flora, it's like she's looking at an animal with hooves and stripes but it definitely isn't a zebra. She begins to suspect that Flora thinks it's her job to police the world.

Three other young women are missing from the Boston area. D.D. Warren is trying to find the girls and fears that Flora will either get in the way, get herself in trouble, or both. When Flora once again disappears, Boston police scramble to find Flora and the rest of the missing women. But with both of Flora's previous kidnappers dead, who could've taken Flora this time and what are the odds of one woman being abducted so many times? When more dead bodies start showing up, the mystery compounds and the suspense ratchets up. This is a good crime thriller but be warned as some scenes might be triggering if you are a claustrophobic!
