Lux is a twenty something living in Hawaii with her boyfriend, Nico. Living her life somewhat as a drifter, she is feeling a bit lost after losing her mother to cancer and then losing her cleaning job. When two recent college grads, Brittany and Amma, hire Nico to bring them on an adventure with his sailboat to an atoll (thank you, Wordle for that vocabulary word) several days journey away, Lux decides to tag along. When they arrive the island seems like the perfect utopia despite being the location of an abandoned WWII airstrip and the host to stories of cannibalism during that time in history. Also there are two people there already: golden couple Jake and Eliza who seem friendly and have plenty of good food and booze to share. The six of them settle into a cozy temporary existence in paradise, even while feelings of unease linger on the periphery of everything they do. Paradise turns out to be an illusion though, as flashbacks into the lives of Amma, Brittany, Eliza, and Jake give the reader insight as to what sinister events are to come!
